Carl Matzen's Brickworks

In 1750, a bricklayer from Iller received permission from the Duke of Glücksborg to establish a brickworks. He acquired land with good clay and a forest where fuel could be obtained. The founder's daughter married a Matzen, and they later took over the brickworks. Since then, the Matzen family has owned it.

The factory is the oldest Danish industrial enterprise owned by the family and located on the same site for all these years.

The brickworks were originally farm brickworks; the owner's residence was the old farmhouse. Most of the land is now leased.

When a brickworks has been in the same place for many years, it naturally leaves its mark. The clay pits are the most obvious, but the buildings tell a story. You can find traces of the three types of kilns that have been used at the brickworks. Two oak posts in one of the warehouses support approx. three meters high, there are clear traces of fire. The posts are said to be from the old chamber kiln. Parts of the old ring kiln building can still be seen, and the tunnel kiln - today's burner technology - is used daily.

The brickworks is owned and operated today by the son Peter Matzen, who is the 8th generation and also the owner of Gråsten Brickworks.
