Maskinrummet Skagen was constructed with outer walls made from the handstruck 3240 Rød med Spil bricks, giving the building a warm look that is full of character. The handstruck surface adds a tactile depth and a dynamic interplay of shades to the brickwork, enhanced further by Skagen’s intense and ever-changing light. The red shades and natural variations of the bricks create a striking contrast to the maritime surroundings and the simple architectural lines of the project. The handstruck texture gives Maskinrummet a robust, honest and site-specific character where the material clearly tells a story.
The idea behind Maskinrummet was to create a modern and functional building that clearly references Skagen’s maritime environment. The building was designed to appear robust and honest in its choice of materials, with the handstruck 3240 Rød med Spil as the main element. The ambition was to blend contemporary architectural appearance with local traditions, creating a house that naturally fits into its surroundings and has a strong, individual identity.
The architecture of Maskinrummet is based on Skagen’s coastal building traditions and the protected, reddish brick buildings that are found in the harbour environment. The entire construction was built using a reddish brick that preserves the visual coherence of the area, giving the large volume a robust, timeless appearance. The development is arranged in several building sections featuring clear lines and a simple, modern style where views and space between the buildings are prioritised through the building zone of the district plan to preserve harbour views for both visitors and passers-by. The result is distinctive, site-specific architecture that both harmonises with the harbour and stands as a new, strong landmark in Skagen.
