Mengel Tower in Aarhus city centre is built in 2210 Kloster Rød, a long-format Roman brick from Matzen Tegl that reinforces the building’s elegant and contemporary architecture. The elongated horizontal lines create a calm and refined façade expression, while the warm red tones establish a natural connection to the area’s traditional residential architecture. The result is a distinctive building that combines timeless brick architecture with a contemporary design language, demonstrating the Roman brick’s unique ability to create character, depth and architectural quality. Mengel Tower was completed in 2016 and received the Aarhus Municipality Architecture Award for Best New Building in the same year.
Architect
Mengel Tower was designed by Karen Exner of Exners Tegnestue, now E+N Arkitektur. The project was conceived as a distinctive urban building that completes the perimeter block structure of the Øgadekvarteret district while adding a contemporary architectural layer to the area. With its characteristic form and carefully crafted detailing, the building stands as a distinctive landmark within the dense urban fabric.
Developer
The developer and owner of the project is Steen Mengel through Mengel Ejendomme. The ambition was to create an uncompromising residential development focused on quality, durability and materials that age beautifully over time. The project is the result of close collaboration between the developer, architect and manufacturers in shaping the building’s distinctive architectural expression.
Øgadekvarteret
Mengel Tower is located on Høegh-Guldbergs Gade in the heart of Aarhus’ sought-after Øgadekvarter district. The neighbourhood is known for its atmospheric apartment buildings dating from the late nineteenth century, tree-lined avenues and vibrant city life close to Aarhus University, the Latin Quarter and the city centre.
The location places high demands on new architecture, and Mengel Tower has therefore been designed with respect for the area’s historic character while introducing a distinctive and contemporary architectural expression to the neighbourhood.
