Verbena Hus demonstrates the many architectural possibilities of brickwork. The project combines classical brick architecture with highly detailed masonry solutions, where the bricks are used both in traditional bond patterns and as striking relief brickwork. Projecting bricks, patterned sections and varying masonry bands create depth, shadow effects and a dynamic façade expression that changes character throughout the day as the light moves across the building.
Verbena Hus was designed by Holscher Nordberg Architects in collaboration with EFFEKT Architects. The project is a strong example of contemporary Danish brick architecture, where material quality and craftsmanship have been integrated into the building’s identity from the very beginning. The architects have worked with a warm red brick palette, creating façades with substantial depth through relief brickwork, distinctive masonry details and a variety of bond patterns.
Brickwork plays a central role in the architectural expression of the building. Through projecting bricks, relief masonry and decorative patterns, the façades have been crafted with a level of detailing that adds depth, variation and shadow effects. This creates a dynamic interplay between light and material, allowing the façade to be experienced differently depending on the time of day and the viewing angle. The masonry details are not merely decorative features but an integral part of the architecture, emphasising the geometry of the building and reinforcing its distinctive character.
Verbena Hus forms part of Grønttorvet in Valby, one of Copenhagen’s most significant urban development areas in recent years. The new district is characterised by high architectural quality, strong material choices and an ambition to give each building its own distinct identity. Brick plays a central role throughout the development, and Matzen Tegl bricks have been used in several of the area’s projects, contributing to the variation, texture and material richness that define the urban environment of Grønttorvet.
